Honoring Andrea Mead Lawrence: A Local Legend

Our local Mammoth Legend, Andrea, is honored in this exhibit depicting imagery from her life. She is missed by all.

Collage - Images of Andrea Mead Lawrence

Andrea was one of the outstanding sportswomen of American sports history as a double gold medalist in skiing at the Olympic Winter Games of 1952.

Growing up at the ski area founded by her parents, Pico Peak, she qualified at the age of 15 for the American Winter Olympic Team of 1948. She finished 8th in the slalom, 21st in the alpine combined and 35th in the downhill after a fall. She finished second in the slalom at the Arlberg-Kadahar race.

She won her first national championship in 1949 and made the 1950 FIS team. In 1951 she skied in Europe finishing first in 10 races and second in 4 others. In Oslo in 1952 she won gold medals in the special slalom and giant slalom. She qualified for her third Olympic Team in 1956 and finished just out of the medals with a 4th in the giant slalom. She was also 25th in the slalom and 30th in the downhill.

She represented the United States at two FIS Congresses and was the torch lighter at the Opening Ceremonies of the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley.
